Funding avenues for overseas education

Although one is well aware of the various benefits of overseas education, people often restrict themselves from doing the same due to the high costs associated with it. The fall in the value of rupee coupled with the rising costs of attaining an international degree hinders study abroad plans that a student may have.
However, the above mentioned facets shouldn’t restrict you from achieving your dreams; various funding avenues are made available for overseas education which makes the process of studying abroad easier. Before making any arrangements for funding, one must undertake meticulous planning to understand the costs that may be incurred. The costs incurred will not only include tuition and application fees but also consists of costs of books, entrance tests fees, travel, accommodation and food.
Parents plan their child’s overseas education expenditure in advance and few students have creative solutions to their financial woes through investments in various avenues. The exchange rate considerations are paramount when making funding plans. After careful deliberations of costs, the following avenues can be availed:

It will take you some time to settle in a new country; therefore before one gets accustomed to the financial situation in the foreign country you must carry local currency and forex cards in case of emergencies.

I’m applying for tuition scholarships through SLCC Awardspring. Any advice?

I will be a new SLCC student in the Spring 2019 Semester. I am on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum hence applying for tuition scholarships.
My question is specifically about the “essay” portion.
The questions themselves are as follows....
“1. Online your academic/career goals and what made you decide to pursue these goals?
  1. Describe three qualities you possess and how they will help enhance your education & success in college.
  2. Sumarize one educational obstacle you have encountered, how you overcame it, and what you learned through that experience.
  3. Address any special personal or family circumstances impacting your need for financial assistance.”
Each of these sections are supposed to be answered in 150-300 words.
My questions:
Is there any kind of wording I should be aiming to use?
Are they looking for a “sob story” or times in the past having to deal with personal issues?
What kind of qualities generally should I be trying to highlight? (As of this moment I started with three general concepts of: Intelligence, Diligence in Researching information & morality).
My academic/career goals involve a cliffs notes version of getting into the financial sector as well as trading (forex, options. futures), aiming to make millions and invest that money directly into state economies as well as going larger into hopefully doing financial deals between countries’ so to speak. (With an emphasis on Latin America & Europe.) Deals such as ones that involve “financial instruments” & “trading paper.”
Basically I want to have as direct an impact on as many people as I can in a positive way and that means this kind of career which revolves around money directly being funneled towards things.
Does that sound too ridiculous to add?
Any help / advice from anyone familiar with scholarship applications such as this is much appreciated.

Student with extra savings, maxed IRA, no 401k [UK & US]

I'm currently a senior undergraduate engineering student at a public university in the US, though I came over from the UK a few years ago, so I have bank accounts in both countries. I'm looking to stay long-term in the US, and plan to enroll in a PhD program here next fall, but I'm open to returning to the UK for a masters program, depending on the university and the funding available, then returning to the US for a PhD.
I'm in a pretty good spot financially, but I have some savings that I don't know what to do with.
  1. I've maxed my Roth IRA contributions for the past two years, and am not eligible for a 401k. What should I do with my savings / emergency fund, given my monthly expenses? Should I continue making the maximum IRA contribution next year?
  2. I've been thinking about opening a brokerage account to do some long-term stock investing (< $1k) in both domestic and foreign stocks (maybe ADR). Any opinions on this, and in particular regarding Scottrade as a broker? Or should I open another brokerage account in the UK for foreign stocks (not familiar with US tax implications)?
  3. I have a UK account that I don't know what to do with. Should I just leave it, or move the funds to the US, taking into account forex risk? If I leave them abroad, I'd like to continue keeping the amount small so I don't have to deal with FBAR. Also, I left before receiving a National Insurance number, so I don't believe I qualify for an ISA.
  1. Scholarship (covers tuition, housing, meal plan, and books): ~$20k / year
  2. Research (part time as a student assistant): ~$3k / year
  3. Summer internship (three months): ~$10 -15k, depending
  1. Vanguard Roth IRA (maxed for this and last year, in index funds): $10.5k
  2. American Express HYS (currently 0.85% APY): ~$12k
  3. PenFed CD (1.35% APY, 2015 maturity): $1k
  4. Chase Checking: ~$2k
  5. UK Barclays Savings (3.25% AER to 0.31% AER after 1yr): ~£1.5k
  1. PenFed CC: ~$1k (limit)
  2. Discover CC: ~$1k (limit)
  1. University (covered by scholarship, billed biannually)
  2. Health insurance through parents, no car, no debt
  3. Cell phone, dining, miscellaneous purchases, etc: < $50 / month, (paid in full on CC)
